Starting To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

For many people collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. They love the colors and the beauty of the wide array of gemstones found around the world today. Read long as we discuss a number of things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.

The very first step in beginning this hobby the right way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By visiting a local library you can locate all you need to know about the subject that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

First, color is a major part in the value of the stone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its pure spectral color the more highly prized it is. Traditionally, these specter colors include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Gemstones colors that are darker or paler tend to be less valued.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors into appraisal of diamonds but you're gemstones as well. An excellent cut will showcase the pure color of the stone, diminish any inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One excellent way to determine the excellence of gemstone cut is to consider how well and consistent it reflects light over its entire surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of the light will refract out rather than reflecting inside. Gem color appears washed out.

Another factor to consider is the clarity of the stone. This is talking about the stones purity or the absence of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal structure. Needless to say, stones with no flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size aspect since it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different pricing structures. This is due to gemstone difference regarding specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Look at each loose gemstone and Think of it as a mini sculpture or piece of art to be highly treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the United States in Michigan you can find Agate, Chlorastrolite and Hematite. And in Canada you can hunt for nephrite jade in Cry Lake, British Columbia or Tourmaline from Chatham Twonship, Quebec along with hessonite garnet in Asbestos, Quebec. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.

The Diamond is the birthstone of April and the anniversary gemstone for the 10th
and 60th years of marriage. Diamonds were discovered in India in 500 B.C., and
the name "diamond" comes from the Greek word "Adamas" which means unconquerable
- suggesting the eternity of love. Since ancient Greece, diamonds and diamond
jewelry have been the traditional symbol of love, and the ancients believed they
were hardened dew drops, splinters from the stars or crystallized lightning. A
diamond is the hardest substance known to humankind, and is made of a
crystallized carbon that has unique powers of light reflection. Since diamonds
are composed of a single element, they are the purest of all gemstones.

Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Stones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many in this hobby love to collect and show case the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. This article will discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

To begin with your first priority is to visit the library and get some books. You want to learn as much as possible about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you understand about gemstones the better off you'll be. You'll know exactly what to buy.

One of the first things you look at is the color of the gem. Top grade gemstones have pure colors there as close as possible in pureness to the spectral colors of violent, blue, green,, orange or red. Muted gemstone colors or too dark are diminished in value.

The cut of your gemstone is an important aspect to consider when buying a gemstone. The stone has to be cut with precision to reflect the light properly. A poor cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. Color saturation, hue and tone will always look inconsistent.

The next factor to look at is the clarity. This refers to the purity of the gemstone or the lack of internal inclusions, particles or spots within the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size aspect because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different pricing structures. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference in specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is such a variety when it comes to gemstones. You could try collecting Chrysoprase, Sugilite Zircon and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go hunting for raw gemstones. The 1370-carat Neelanjali Star Ruby has been listed in the Guinness Book of
World Records as the largest double star ruby in the world. The enormous star
ruby of Indian origin belongs to the retired lawyer G. Vidyaraj who lives in
Bangalore, India, and claims his descent from the kings of the Vijayanagar
Empire. Vidyaraj inherited the Neelanjali Ruby and the other enormous rubies,
the 3,553-carat Ravirathna Ruby and the 2,475-carat Rajarathna Ruby from his
father, who had inherited them from his ancestors who were direct descendants of
the Vijayanagar royal family. In fact neither Vidyarajs father or his ancestors
would have been aware that they were in possession of such enormously large
rubies, as the large rough stones were actually sacred objects of worship known
as lingams, the symbols of Shiva, called Saligramas. Over the years these
objects of worship were covered with layers of grime and soot, and their bright
red colors concealed. No one would dare touch these objects for fear of
desecration, and the secret of the stones remained hidden for centuries, until
Vidyaraj who was not much inclined towards religion, out of curiosity began to
investigate the nature of the stones, by cleaning them with soap and brush. To
his utter amazement the bright red color of the stones were exposed, which were
subsequently identified as rubies.

The common opal is quite a departure from the precious opal. There are several
different types of common opals: the milk opal, opals with blue and green tints,
resin opal, and a wood opal. There are also opals that can be found around hot
springs and geysers. They are a clear glass opal made up of geyserite. There are
other varieties of opals most notably the fire opal and Peruvian opal. Mexico
and Mesoamerica is the chief source of the fire opal. They come from the Mexican
high country where they can be found in rock surrounding extinct volcanoes. It
is extracted from open-pit mines in the canyons and valleys there. It should be
noted that more durable fire opals are found in drier region. The drier the
region the more durable the opal will be. While Mexico produces the most fire
opals they can be found in Honduras, Ethiopia, United States, Australia, Canada,
Turkey and areas in former Russian states.

The first thing you need to do is to visit the library and get some books. You want to learn as much as you possibly can about your new hobby. The more you understand about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You need to be as informed as possible.

One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Top grade gemstones exhibit colors similar to the exact spectral color of orange, green, yellow, Violet or blue. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or too dark can lower the value quite easily.

The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits in evaluating gemstones. The stone has to be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. Color tone, saturation, and hue will never be consistent.

Gemstone clarity is our next factor. When we talk of clarity it relates to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. A gemstones that is normally found to be clean is more valuable. To see flaws beyond with the eye can see requires a 10X gemstone clarity magnifier or gem microscope. Most hobbyists will get a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size criteria since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different pricing structures. This is due to the difference in relative density or specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can be very enjoyable and rewarding in the long run. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go looking for gemstones. Take the example of the US. In New Jersey you can find Smoky Quartz, Agate, Pearl and Prehnite. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or hunt the peridot fields in Mortlake in Victoria, Australia.
