The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

For many people collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors of the wide array of gemstones found worldwide today. Follow along as we examine the things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.

The first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the intelligent way is through the power of knowledge. By visiting a local library you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its purer spectral value the more valuable it is. Remember that the spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Colors that tend to be darker or paler are considered a lower value.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors into appraisal of diamonds along with gemstones. An excellent cut will highlight the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One excellent way to determine the excellence regarding the cut of the gemstone is how consistently it reflects the light over its entire surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, much of the light will refract out of the gem instead of reflecting inside. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

Our next consideration is gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of the gemstone. Normally large flaws are visible to the naked eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.

Next thing to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to the fact gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Arizona you can find Agatized wood (Petrified wood), Azur-Malachite, Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Jasper and Moissanite Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or hunt the quartz regions in Beechworth and Mooralla in Victoria Australia.

How To Start Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

For many people collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors Of the assorted number of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Follow along as we look at a number of factors you should understand when starting to collect varieties of gemstones yourself.

The first thing you need to do is to visit the library and get some books. You want to understand as much as possible about your new hobby. The more you know about each kind of gemstone the better off you'll be. You will know exactly what to look for.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they've even become associated with particular ones. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher when they are equal in color to the spectral colors of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They are valued much less the farther they are from the spectral color.

The cut of a gemstonestone is the second most important factor to look at before a purchase. The precision of cut is the factor that determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. It will ultimately ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much someone will pay for it.

Another factor to look at is the clarity. This means the stones purity or the lack of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal. Without a doubt, zero flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size aspect since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different in prices as well. This is due to the difference in relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Here's a suggestion -- don't think of a gem as a component of jewelry; Think of it as a mini sculpture or piece of art to be highly treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in Nevada you can hunt for Rock Crystal, Citrine, Nevada Turquoise and Virgin Valley Black Fire Opal. And in Canada you can hunt for nephrite jade in Mount Ogden, British Columbia or amethyst near Thunder Bay, Ontario and even iolite from Manitouwadge, Ontario. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.

The Mandalay Ruby. This 48.019-carat cushion-shaped ruby was offered for sale by
Sothebys New York on October 18th, 1988 but received no bids. Sothebys implied
that it may have been the 47-carat J.N. Forster Ruby, which was found sometime
before 1877, but this is quickly ruled out. Two large Burma rubies brought to
England in 1875, weighing 37 and 47 carats. These were put on the market by the
Burmese royal family and were later recut by Forster to 32 5/16 and 39 9/16 ct (
or 38 9/16 ct); one sold for 10,000, the other for 20,000, respectively.
Sotheby's also implied at the same time that it could be one other famous yet
unnamed ruby weighing 46 carats; oblong in form (probably cut); mounted in a
brooch with four brilliant-cut diamonds and sold (or bought in) at Christie's of
London on May 7th, 1896 for 8000. Many doubt this version of its history as
well.
