The more you understand about each kind of gemstone the wiser will be your purchases. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.

One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Top grade gemstones exhibit colors similar to the exact spectral color of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Gemstone colors that are muted or are too dark can lower the value.

Gemstone cut is the second most important value determination to consider. The precision of cut is the factor which determines how much light the gemstone stone will reflect. The cut will determine the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

Next to look at is the aspect of clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Larger flaws you can usually see with your naked eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.

Next to consider are weight and size. Save for pearls and corals, all gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. You should know however that weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can very. Take a diamond that is 1.00 carats in weight and you will find that a Sapphire or ruby of the same size would weigh 1.20 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can be very enjoyable and could be rewarding as well over time. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. So You Want To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting loose diamonds or loose gemstones. Some people even begin to visit various locations close by or possibly even in other countries to look for raw gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If this sounds like a hobby you would like to get involved in read along as we show you the different aspects of this hobby.

To begin with you'll need the knowledge on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know what exactly you're looking for so you buy the right items. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They drop in value the farther they are from the natural color.

How the gemstone has been cut is the second most important factor to consider before buying. The precision of the cut determines the amount of light the stone will reflect. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

Gemstone clarity is our next factor. When we talk of clarity it relates to a stones relative freedom from inclusions or blemishes. A gemstones that is normally found to be clean is definitely worth much more. To see flaws beyond with the eye can see requires a gemstone loupe or gemstone microscope. Serious hobbyists will use a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.

Another consideration is the duo of weight and size. Because gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gemstone would be about 1.23 carats.

Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gems that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Take each loose gemstone and Think of it as a mini sculpture or piece of art to be highly treasured for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the United States in Missouri you can hunt for Pearl, Fluorite, Pyrite and Calcite. And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in Mount Sidney Williams, British Columbia or labradorite on the adjacent islands and coastal area of Labrador as well as hessonite garnet in Asbestos, Quebec. Take up a hobby of loose gemstone collecting and enjoy yourself.

Durability should take into consideration the ability of the stone to withstand wear and also how practical the stone is for its intended use. coloured gemstones including the beautiful Tanzanite (blue zoisite). Other
gemstones mined in the country include ruby, rhodolite, sapphire, emerald,
amethyst, chrysoprase, peridot and tormaline. Recently, a major alluvial
occurrence was discovered in the southern region of Ruvuma, Mtwara and Lindi.
Varieties include chrysoberyl, spinels, sapphire, garnets, zircons and diamonds.

Peridot belongs to the forsterite-fayalite mineral series, which is part of the olivine group. It is one of the "idiochromatic" gems, meaning its color comes from the basic chemical composition of the mineral itself, not from minor impurities, and therefore will only be found in shades of green. The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology as a hobby. They become interested in making a collection of loose gemstones or loose diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit various locations close by to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you follow along as we discuss the different aspects of this hobby.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get yourself some reading material. You want to understand as much as possible about your new hobby. The more you learn about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You will know exactly what to look for.

First on your list to take into account should be gemstone color. You'll want the stone that is as close as possible to the pure spectral colors. The spectral colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Generally, the prices very pale or very dark stones are lower in value.

Gemstone cut is an important factor to consider when buying a gemstone. The cut has to be done in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A stone that has a poor cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. Color saturation, hue and tone will always look inconsistent.

Our next consideration is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of a stone being considered. Larger flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye with others needing to be magnified 10X

Next comes size and weight. All gemstones [except for pearls and corals] are valued by the unit called the carat. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a Sapphire or ruby of the same size would weigh 1.20 carats.

Look at each stone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. Tips On quality loose diamonds

Think twice before putting gems in an ultrasonic cleaner. Diamonds, rubies and
sapphires will be fine but many other gems may not be: when in doubt, leave it
out. Diamonds, rubies and sapphires, and other single-crystal gems can be
cleaned with a touch of ammonia in water to remove all films and add extra
sparkle. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner or ammonia for cleaning such opaque
gemstones like lapis, turquoise, malachite or onyx. They should be wiped clean
gently with a moist cloth. These gemstones can be porous and may absorb
chemicals, even soap, which may build up inside the stone and discolor it. The
reason why these materials need more care than transparent gemstones is that
these materials are essentially rocks, not crystals of a single mineral. Think
about it: when you put a rock in water, it absorbs the water and is moist all
the way through. A single crystal gem like sapphire will not absorb water: all
the molecules are lined up so tightly in the crystal that there is no room for
water to enter.

Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Stones

By Lee MacRae

Many hobbyists love to collect and work with the wide variety of gemstones available today. This article will examine the loose gemstones hobby.

To begin with your first priority is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to know everything there is to know about the subject of gemstones. The more you learn about gemstones the better off you'll be. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.

This means red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Generally, the prices very pale or very dark precious and semi precious gemstones are lower in value.

Gemstone cut is the second most important factor to look at. The preciseness of the cut will determine how much light is reflected by the gemstone. The cut will determine the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

In parts of the world sapphires may have come from ancient formations that were
once impure marble which developed over time through metamorphic conditions into
crystalline cal silicates known as skarns. A skarn is a metamorphic rock that is
usually variably colored green or red, occasionally grey, black, brown or white.
It usually forms by chemical processes that form rocks during metamorphism and
in the contact zone of magma like intrusions. Skarns in the igneous environment
are associated with marble and wider zones of cal silicate rocks. Mixtures of
corundum, titanium and iron were also a part of the crystallization process.
Because of this process there are numerous inclusions in a sapphire, and like
the ruby, they are useful in verification techniques when authenticating the
stone.
