Starting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well for one thing they are very beautiful items. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, their value increases over time. Many in this hobby love to find, collect and finish the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

To start off right you'll need the knowledge on the wide variety of stones available. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from wasting your money. A knowledgeable buyer is a wise one.

Color is a very important part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer the color comes to its pure spectral color the more valuable the stone becomes. Remember that the spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Gemstones colors that are darker or palerthan a pure color diminish the value of the stone.

The cut of the gemstone is easily one of the most important aspects when you value gemstone. The cut has to be done in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A gemstone with the poor cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. The color hue, color tone and saturation will always appear inconsistent

A third consideration is the clarity of the stone. This is talking about the purity of the gemstone with no internal conclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal structure. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This factor comes from the difference regarding specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gems that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Take each loose gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can find your raw materials through field trips In the US in Idaho you'll find Garnet, Opal, Agate, Obsidian and Sapphire. And in Canada you can find nephrite jade in the Frances Lake area in the Yukon Territory or sodalite and rose quartz near Bancroft, Ontario as well as amethyst from Nova Scotia. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.

The common opal is quite a departure from the precious opal. There are several
different types of common opals: the milk opal, opals with blue and green tints,
resin opal, and a wood opal. There are also opals that can be found around hot
springs and geysers. They are a clear glass opal made up of geyserite. There are
other varieties of opals most notably the fire opal and Peruvian opal. Mexico
and Mesoamerica is the chief source of the fire opal. They come from the Mexican
high country where they can be found in rock surrounding extinct volcanoes. It
is extracted from open-pit mines in the canyons and valleys there. It should be
noted that more durable fire opals are found in drier region. The drier the
region the more durable the opal will be. While Mexico produces the most fire
opals they can be found in Honduras, Ethiopia, United States, Australia, Canada,
Turkey and areas in former Russian states.
