Starting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would someone go to the trouble of collect loose gemstones? For many people it's because they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And just like natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many people love to collect and work with each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

The very first step in becoming a gemstone collector the right way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will prevent you from making mistakes at the start.

Of paramount importance is the color of the gemstone. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have pure colors there as close as possible to the exact spectral color of yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are muted or on the dark side lowers the value per carat.

Gemstone cut is an important factor to consider when buying a gemstone. The gemstone must be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A gemstone with an improper cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. Color saturation, color hue and color tone will be inconsistent.

The clarity of a gemstone is an important consideration. Clarity refers to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. A perfect gemstone is obviously valued highly. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye requires a 10X gemstone loupe or gemstone microscope. Serious hobbyists will use a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size criteria because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This is due to the difference in relative density or specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Collecting gemstones as a hobby can be very enjoyable and could be rewarding as well over time. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Texas You can find Beryl, Pearl and Tourmaline. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or hunt specimens the quartz regions in Wave Hill in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Tips About loose gemstones wholesale

Peridot is mentioned in the Bible under the Hebrew name of "pitdah". Peridot gems along with other gems were probably used in the fabled Breastplates of the Jewish High Priests, artifacts that have never been found. Legend has it that peridot was the favorite gemstone of Cleopatra. Crusaders brought peridot to Central Europe where it is found in many medieval churches such as the Cologne Cathedral. In the Baroque era the deep green gemstone experienced another short flourishing, before it became forgotten again.
Napoleon used peridot to assure the empress Josephine of his undying love and admiration, which, of course, happened before he had their marriage annulled.
Throughout time, peridot has been confused with many other gemstones, even emerald. Many "emeralds" of royal treasures have turned out to be peridots.
The largest cut peridot was found on the island Zabargad, weights 319ct and belongs to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.
