Gemology is the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become interested in making a collection of loose diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of these hobbyists start to visit various locations close by to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Number one to look at Is gemstone color. Highly prized gemstones have colors that are close to the purest spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, Violet or blue. Gemstone colors that are muted or on the dark side can lower the value quite easily.
The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits in evaluating gemstones. The gemstone must be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A stone that has a poor cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. The hue, tone and color saturation will never be consistent.
The clarity in a stone is our next factor. Clarity refers to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. A gemstones that is normally found to be clean is obviously valued highly. To see flaws beyond with the eye can see you need a gem microscope or gemstone clarity magnifier. Most hobbyists will buy an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing stamps, coins, beads as well as gems.
The next factors to consider our size and weight. All gemstones [except for pearls and corals] are valued by the unit called the carat. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. However you should know size and weight and gemstones are not the same. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a similar sized ruby or sapphire weighs 1.20 carats.
