Starting To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well to begin with they are very beautiful items. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can appreciate in value over time. Many in this hobby love to collect and show case the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

The first thing you need to do is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to know everything there is to know about your new hobby. The more you know about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You need to be as informed as possible.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They are valued much less the farther they deviate from the pure natural color.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds along with gemstones. A precision cut gemstone showcases the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One way to determine the precision in the cut of the stone is to consider how well and consistent it reflects light over the stones complete surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow much of the light will refract out of the gem instead of reflecting inside the gemstone. The gem appears washed out.

Next up is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of a stone being considered. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.

Next to consider are size and weight. Except for corals and pearls, all gemstones are valued by the unit called the carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. You should know however that weight and size are not always equal and gemstones. Density or specific gravity can very. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized sapphire or ruby weighs out at 1.20 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Obsidian, Quartz and its varieties or Zeolite (Thomsonite) and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if money is tight you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. For example in California you can find Agate, Benitoite, Californite, Diamond, Citrine, Tourmaline, Abalone Pearl, Kunzite, Chrysopras
