Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Stones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up gemology more as a hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. A number of these hobbyists start to travel to different areas to look for raw gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you then read along as this article discusses the various factors in gemstone collecting.

The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to learn as much as you possibly can about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you know about each kind of gemstone the wiser will be your purchases. With adequate knowledge you are less likely to be fooled.

Of paramount importance is the color of the gem. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have pure colors there as close as possible in pureness to the spectral colors of yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or are too dark can lower the value quite easily.

The cut of the gemstone is easily one of the most important aspects when you consider a gemstone's value. The cut has to be done in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A gemstone with an improper cut will not reflect the light consistently. The hue, tone and color saturation will always appear inconsistent

Another factor to consider is the clarity. This is talking about the purity of the gemstone with no internal conclusions, particles or spots within the crystal structure. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different pricing structures. This factor comes from the difference regarding specific gravity or relative density and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type For example, a one carat round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Collecting gemstones as a hobby can be very enjoyable and rewarding in the long run. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people loved to spend weekends to go looking for gemstones. Just in the United States in Missouri you can hunt for Pearl, Fluorite, Pyrite and Calcite. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or hunt specimens the quartz regions in Wave Hill in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Selenite helps to align you with higher consciousness. As you develop
spiritually it is beneficial to allow yourself to listen to or sense guidance
from your higher self, spirit guides or angels. This stone opens the crown
chakra to receive transmissions of information and wisdom. On a physical level
it helps with the spine, bone and muscular structure of the body. Selenite is a
white stone, though recently I have found red selenite (it looks orange to me)
that can re-align the emotional structure of ones consciousness.
