The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up this profession as a passionate hobby. They become interested in collecting and evaluating loose gemstones or loose diamonds. You'll even find some that like to travel to different areas close by or to other countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If this sounds like a hobby you would like to get involved in read along as we discuss the various factors in gemstone collecting.

The very first step in beginning this hobby the right way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find everything you need to know that will make you an informed buyer.

The chief thing you need to factor in is gemstone color. You'll want the gemstone that is as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. This means blue, green, yellow, orange, red and violet. The prices for very pale or very dark precious and semi precious gemstones are lower in value.

The cut of the gemstone is an important factor to consider when you consider a gemstone's value. The gemstone must be cut with precision to reflect the light properly. A gemstone with the poor cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. The color hue, color tone and saturation will be inconsistent.

The clarity in a stone is the next item to consider. Gemstone clarity relates to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. A flawless gemstone is definitely worth much more. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye you need a gem microscope or 10X gemstone clarity magnifier. Many hobbyists will get an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size aspect because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different in prices as well. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference in relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type For example, a one carat round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can be very enjoyable and could be rewarding as well over time. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Georgia you can find Ruby, Beryl, Amethyst, Citrine, Garnet and Quartz. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or hunt the quartz regions in Beechworth and Mooralla in Victoria Australia.

Tips On loose diamonds for less

Since 1892, Sapphires have been mined at Gem Peak area on Rock Creek near
Philipsburg, Montana. The first load of sapphires is shipped from Placer mines
and eventually as far away as Switzerland for watch jewels and fine instrument
bearings. Here was a world-class discovery and supply to meet a growing demand
for corundum; sapphires and rubies. That Rock Creek deposit was known early on
as being exceedingly abundant, and is notable as the only placer concentration
plentiful enough to have been worked commercially for sapphires. Since those
early days, and continuing into modern times, Montanans and visitors have
enjoyed mining gemstones for fine jewellery. Colours range from the classic "
cornflower blue" to "red-orange" and "mint green." The sapphires found and
finished here have a character and beauty all their own.
