Starting The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would someone go to the trouble of collect loose gemstones? For many people it's because they are very beautiful items. And just like natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many people love to collect and work with the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

Right at the start you need to learn all you can on the various gemstones available. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from wasting your money. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

Color is a very important part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer a color is to its purer spectral value the more valuable it is. Traditional spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Colors that tend to be paler or darker than the pure color tend to be less valued.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but you're gemstones as well. An excellent cut will showcase the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One excellent method to determine the precision of the cut of the stone is to consider how well it reflects light on a consistent basis over its entire surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side much of the light will refract out of the gem rather than reflecting inside. Gem color appears washed out.

The clarity in a stone is the next item to consider. When we talk of clarity it relates to a stones relative freedom from inclusions or blemishes. The gemstone without flaws is obviously worth more. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye requires a 10X gemstone loupe or gemstone microscope. Serious hobbyists will use an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

Next up are size and weight. Except for corals and pearls, all gemstones are priced by the carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. You should know however that size and weight and gemstones are not the same. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a similar sized sapphire or ruby weighs out at 1.20 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can be very enjoyable and could be rewarding as well over time. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to take vacations to go looking for gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Maine you can find Tourmaline, Beryl, Rose Quartz, Pearl, Topaz, Amazonite, Clear & Smoky Quartz and Aquamarine. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or hunt the sapphire fields in Anakie, Rubyvale, Sapphire, Glenalva, The Willows, Inverell or Glen Innes in Queensland, Austalia.
