The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from
natural diamonds to
loose gemstones. A number of people taken up this profession more as a hobby. They become interested in making a collection of items like
loose gemstone or
natural diamonds. Some people even begin to visit various local locations to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you follow along as we reveal the various aspects of gemstone collecting.
The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to understand everything there is to know about the subject of gemstones. The more you understand about each kind of gemstone the better off you'll be. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.
The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they have even lent their names to specific colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones become higher in value the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They become less valuable the farther they are from the pure spectral color.
Stone cut is the next factor to look at before buying. The precision of cut is the factor that determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.
Next to look at is the aspect of clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of the gemstone under consideration. Normally large flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with others needing to be magnified 10X
You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference regarding specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.
Taking up the hobby of gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people loved to spend weekends to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In California you can find Agate, Benitoite, Californite, Diamond, Citrine, Tourmaline, Abalone Pearl, Kunzite, Chrysopras And if you like to travel farther you can find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or hunt the quartz regions in Beechworth and Mooralla in Victoria Australia.
