The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well to begin with they are very beautiful items. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can appreciate in value over time. Many in this hobby love to collect and show case the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

The first thing you need to do is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to know everything there is to know about your new hobby. The more you know about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You need to be as informed as possible.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They are valued much less the farther they are from the pure spectral color.

How the gemstone is cut is the second most important value determination to look at. How precise the cut is determines the amount of light the gemstone stone will reflect. The cut will factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

Next to look at is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone being considered. Normally large flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.

Next up are weight and size. Except for corals and pearls, all gemstones are valued by the unit called the carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. You should know however that weight and size are not the same in gemstones. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a similar sized ruby or sapphire is 1.20 carats.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Take each loose gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the US in New Mexico you'll find Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Rock Crystal and Obsidian And in Canada you can find rhodonite at various locations in British Columbia or blue spinel from Daillebout, Quebec and even zircons in Sebastopol and Brudnell Townships in Renfew County, Ontario. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.

Hints On natural blue diamonds

Aventurine can look like jade or amazonite. Dark green Aventurine usually has
inclusions (because of the green fuchsite mica and sometimes a bit of pyrite)
which makes a speckled appearance. This identifying feature is often called
aventurescence. Aenturine is found in Brazil, India, Japan, Russia, Tanzania,
and USA.

There are many very beautiful stones that appear to be good candidates for jewelry but in fact are easily damaged and nearly impossible to cut because of the structure of the crystal. The Moh's hardness scale is the accepted gauge for determining a stone's overall durability.
