Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. Many people have a great love of the various gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Read long as we discuss a number of things you need to know in starting in this interesting hobby.

The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some reading material. You want to learn everything there is to know about your new hobby. The more you understand about the hobby of gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You will know exactly what to look for.

One of the first things you look at is the color of the gem. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have colors that are close to the exact spectral color of violent, blue, green,, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or too dark can lower the value.

The cut of a stone is the second most important factor to look at. The precision of cut is the factor which determines how much light the stone will reflect. The cut will factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.

Next up is gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone being considered. Larger flaws are visible to the unaided eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different in prices as well. This factor comes from the difference in relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be a great hobby. And there is a wide range and variety when it comes to gemstones. You can start collecting gemstones like Feldspar (moonstone), Citrine or Variscite and then try others. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if money is tight you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Take the example of the US. In New Jersey you can find Smoky Quartz, Agate, Pearl and Prehnite.

The weight of a diamond is measured in carats (ct.). Each carat is divided into
100 points. For example: 1ct.= 100 points, 1/2 ct. = 50 points. Points in a
fraction are measured within acceptable ranges. For example: a 1/2 ct diamond
pendant may have a range of + or - .06 points. In other words, the total diamond
weight may vary from .44 to .56 points and still be considered a 1/2 carat.
