First, color is a major part in the value of the stone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its pure spectral color the more highly prized it is. Traditionally, these specter colors include violent, blue, green,, orange and red. Colors that tend to be paler or darker are considered a lower value.
The cut of the gemstone is the second most important value determination to look at before buying. The precision of cut is the factor which determines how much light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will ultimately ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much it will be valued.
Our next consideration is the clarity of the gemstone. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone being considered. Larger flaws are visible to the unaided eye while others need a 10X magnification.
You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size criteria because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but have different carat weights that result in different pricing structures. This is due to gemstone difference of relative density or specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.
Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You could try collecting Lapis lazuli, Citrine or Zircon and then try others. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if money is tight you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the United States. In Michigan you can find Agate, Chlorastrolite and Hematite.
