How To Start Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect loose diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of these hobbyists start to visit different areas nearby or in other countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If this hobby interest you read along as this article discusses the things you should know to start this hobby.

The first step in beginning this hobby the proper way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find everything you need to know that will make you an informed buyer.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones are valued much higher when they are equal in color to the spectral colors of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They become less valuable the farther they deviate from the pure natural color.

The cut of your gemstone is an important factor to consider in evaluating gemstones. The cut has to be done correctly to reflect light properly. A gemstone with the poor cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. Color saturation, hue and tone will always look inconsistent.

Next to look at is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone being considered. Larger flaws are visible to the unaided eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size aspect because of being more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but have different carat weights that result in different prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference in relative density or specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Collecting gemstones as a hobby can be very enjoyable and also rewarding in the long run. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or hunt the quartz regions in Yellowdine Lake in Western Australia.

Everything changed in the "diamond world" when diamond stones started being
discovered outside of India. First, there was Borneo and then somewhere along
the line Brazil and China joined the fray. Then the glittering light of the
diamond appeared in South Africa. It happened in the 19th century. The first
known South African diamond was picked up on a beach on the African coast by a
boy who was walking through the sand. This event precipitated a new "diamond
rush" with its roots in that part of the world.

In parts of the world sapphires may have come from ancient formations that were
once impure marble which developed over time through metamorphic conditions into
crystalline cal silicates known as skarns. A skarn is a metamorphic rock that is
usually variably colored green or red, occasionally grey, black, brown or white.
It usually forms by chemical processes that form rocks during metamorphism and
in the contact zone of magma like intrusions. Skarns in the igneous environment
are associated with marble and wider zones of cal silicate rocks. Mixtures of
corundum, titanium and iron were also a part of the crystallization process.
Because of this process there are numerous inclusions in a sapphire, and like
the ruby, they are useful in verification techniques when authenticating the
stone.
